Glossary
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ADC | Analogue-to-digital converter. Converts an analogue input signal into digital audio for the computer. |
| ARC | Audient Resource Centre. The Audient account and product-registration service used to access software and product resources. |
| ASIO | Audio Stream Input/Output. The Windows low-latency audio-driver system used by recording applications with EVO 4. |
| Buffer size | The amount of audio held by the computer's audio driver while processing. Smaller buffers reduce software-monitoring latency but require more processing performance. |
| Control Knob | EVO 4's central rotary control. Its function changes according to the selected input, output or monitoring control. |
| DAC | Digital-to-analogue converter. Converts digital audio from the computer into an analogue signal for the monitor and headphone outputs. |
| DAW | Digital Audio Workstation. Software used to record, edit, mix or play back audio. |
| dB | Decibel. A unit used to express changes or ratios in audio level. |
| dBFS | Decibels relative to digital full scale. 0 dBFS is the maximum level in a digital audio system. |
| dBu | A voltage-referenced audio level where 0 dBu equals 0.775 Vrms. |
| DI / instrument input | The high-impedance input used to connect instruments such as electric guitar or bass directly to EVO 4. On EVO 4, connecting the front instrument input overrides rear input 1. |
| Gain | The amount of amplification applied to an input signal before conversion to digital audio. |
| JFET | Junction Field Effect Transistor. EVO 4 uses a JFET instrument-input stage for high-impedance instruments. |
| Latency | The delay between an audio signal entering or being generated by the system and being heard at an output. |
| Loopback | Internal routing that allows computer playback and EVO 4 inputs to be combined and presented to recording or streaming software as a stereo input. |
| Monitor Mix | EVO 4's direct-monitoring balance between the live input signals and playback from the computer. |
| Monitor Pan | Positions the directly monitored EVO 4 inputs within the left-right monitor mix. |
| Phantom power / 48 V | DC power sent through an XLR microphone connection for microphones that require it, typically condenser microphones. Check the microphone documentation before enabling it. |
| Sample rate | The number of digital audio samples taken each second. EVO 4 supports sample rates up to 96 kHz. |
| Smartgain | EVO's automatic gain-setting feature. It analyses the selected input signals while you perform and sets the input gain automatically. |
| SmartMuting | EVO 4 behaviour that automatically mutes the monitor outputs when headphones are connected. |
| Stereo link | Links inputs 1 and 2 so their gain and mute controls operate together for a stereo source. Phantom power remains controlled independently for each input. |
| TRS | Tip-Ring-Sleeve 1/4-inch jack connection. Commonly used for balanced line-level audio. |
| TS | Tip-Sleeve 1/4-inch jack connection. Commonly used for unbalanced instrument connections. |
| USB bus power | Power supplied to EVO 4 through its USB connection, so a separate power supply is not normally required. |
| XLR | Three-pin balanced connector used for microphone signals. |
