Glossary
A - Ampere
A unit of electrical current.
ADAT - Alesis Digital Audio Tape
An optical multichannel digital-audio format. iD44 MKII carries up to eight ADAT channels per optical port at 44.1/48 kHz, or four channels per port using SMUX at 88.2/96 kHz.
ADC - Analogue-to-Digital Converter
Converts an analogue audio signal into digital audio.
ASIO - Audio Stream Input/Output
A low-latency audio-driver protocol commonly used by professional audio applications on Windows.
BNC
A locking coaxial connector. iD44 MKII uses a BNC connector for Word Clock output.
Buffer Size
The amount of audio data processed by the computer at one time. Smaller buffers reduce software-monitoring latency but increase CPU demand.
Clock Source
The device or digital input providing the timing reference used to synchronise digital audio equipment.
Cue Mix
An independent monitoring mix with its own channel balance and output level, commonly used to create a separate performer mix.
DAC - Digital-to-Analogue Converter
Converts digital audio into an analogue signal for outputs such as monitors or headphones.
DAW - Digital Audio Workstation
Software used to record, edit, mix and play back audio.
DAW THRU
Routes DAW playback directly to a selected physical output, bypassing the normal iD Mixer path.
dB - Decibel
A logarithmic unit used to express a ratio between signal levels.
dBFS - Decibels relative to Full Scale
A digital level measurement in which 0 dBFS represents the maximum digital signal level.
dBu
A voltage-referenced audio level unit. 0 dBu = 0.775 V RMS.
DC - Direct Current
D.I. / Instrument Input
A high-impedance input intended for instruments such as electric guitar or bass.
DoC - Declaration of Conformity
DSP - Digital Signal Processing
FCC - Federal Communications Commission
HPF - High-pass Filter
A filter that reduces frequencies below its cutoff point. The iD44 MKII input HPF is specified at 100 Hz.
I/O - Input/Output
JFET - Junction Field-Effect Transistor
A transistor type used in the iD44 MKII instrument-input circuitry.
Latency
The delay between an audio signal entering a system and the corresponding audio being heard or returned.
LED - Light-Emitting Diode
Loopback
Routes selected computer or iD Mixer audio back into recording or streaming software through dedicated virtual inputs. iD44 MKII Loopback appears on Input 21+22.
Phantom Power
DC power supplied through an XLR microphone connection for equipment that requires it. iD44 MKII provides +48 V phantom power independently on each analogue input.
Polarity Reverse
Inverts the polarity of an audio signal. It is represented by the Ø symbol in the iD Software Mixer.
RoHS - Restriction of Hazardous Substances
Sample Rate
The number of audio samples captured or reproduced per second. iD44 MKII supports 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96 kHz.
ScrollControl
An iD44 MKII function that allows the main encoder to act as a virtual scroll wheel for compatible software controls.
SMUX
A method used by ADAT to carry higher-sample-rate audio. iD44 MKII carries four ADAT channels per optical port at 88.2/96 kHz when using SMUX.
S/PDIF - Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format
A two-channel digital-audio format supported by the iD44 MKII optical connections at sample rates up to 96 kHz.
THD+N - Total Harmonic Distortion plus Noise
A measurement of distortion and noise introduced by an audio path.
TOSLINK
The optical connector and cable format used by the iD44 MKII optical digital I/O.
TRS - Tip, Ring, Sleeve
A three-conductor jack connection that can carry balanced mono audio or stereo audio depending on its application.
TS - Tip, Sleeve
A two-conductor jack connection commonly used for unbalanced mono signals.
USB - Universal Serial Bus
V - Volt
A unit of electrical potential.
Word Clock
A timing signal used to synchronise digital audio equipment. iD44 MKII provides a BNC Word Clock Output; the BNC connector is output only.
XLR
A connector type commonly used for balanced microphone-level audio. iD44 MKII uses three-pin XLR connections as part of its microphone/line combo inputs.
