TermMeaning
ADCAnalogue-to-digital converter. Converts an analogue input signal into digital audio.
ADATA multichannel optical digital-audio format. EVO 16 can use its optical ports for ADAT expansion.
ARCAudient Resource Centre. The Audient account and product-registration service used to access software and product resources.
ASIOAudio Stream Input/Output. The Windows low-latency audio-driver system used by recording applications with EVO 16.
BNCA locking coaxial connector. EVO 16 provides a BNC word-clock output for synchronising compatible digital equipment.
Buffer sizeThe amount of audio held by the computer's audio driver while processing. Smaller buffers reduce software-monitoring latency but require more processing performance.
Clock sourceThe digital timing reference used by EVO 16. A digital system must have one master clock, with other devices synchronised to it.
Cue MixOne of four independent EVO Mixer monitor mixes, Cue A-D. Cue Mixes can be routed to analogue, headphone or digital outputs and can also be used as loopback sources.
DACDigital-to-analogue converter. Converts digital audio into analogue signals for the line and headphone outputs.
DAWDigital Audio Workstation. Software used to record, edit, mix or play back audio.
DAW THRUEVO 16 output-routing mode that sends a DAW playback channel directly to the selected hardware output rather than routing it through a software-monitor mix.
dBDecibel. A unit used to express changes or ratios in audio level.
dBFSDecibels relative to digital full scale. 0 dBFS is the maximum level in a digital audio system.
dBuA voltage-referenced audio level where 0 dBu equals 0.775 Vrms.
DI / instrument inputA high-impedance input for instruments such as electric guitar or bass. EVO 16 provides front-panel instrument connections for analogue inputs 1 and 2.
Function buttonEVO 16's programmable front-panel F button. It can be assigned to functions including Dim, Alt Speakers, Talkback or Mono.
GainThe amount of amplification applied to an input signal before conversion to digital audio.
JFETJunction Field Effect Transistor. EVO 16 uses JFET instrument-input stages for high-impedance instruments.
LatencyThe delay between an audio signal entering or being generated by the system and being heard at an output.
LoopbackInternal routing that presents computer playback or an EVO Mixer mix to another application as a stereo input. On EVO 16, loopback appears on input channels 23+24.
Main MixThe primary monitor mix in the EVO Mixer. It can be routed to the main line outputs, headphone outputs or other available outputs.
Motion UIEVO 16's front-panel display system, used for metering, parameter feedback, status information and hardware settings.
Optical S/PDIFTwo-channel S/PDIF digital audio carried over an optical TOSLINK connection. EVO 16 optical ports can be configured for ADAT or optical S/PDIF.
Phantom power / 48VDC power sent through an XLR microphone connection for microphones that require it, typically condenser microphones. Check the microphone documentation before enabling it.
Sample rateThe number of digital audio samples taken each second. EVO 16 supports sample rates up to 96 kHz.
SmartgainEVO's automatic gain-setting feature. EVO 16 can analyse and set the gain for multiple analogue inputs during one Smartgain process.
SMUXA method used by ADAT to carry higher sample rates by spreading each channel across additional optical bandwidth. At 88.2 or 96 kHz, each EVO 16 ADAT optical connection carries four channels.
Standalone stateA mixer and routing configuration stored in EVO 16 for use when the interface is powered without a host computer.
Stereo linkLinks an adjacent analogue-input pair so it can be controlled as a stereo source. EVO 16 supports pairs 1+2, 3+4, 5+6 and 7+8.
TalkbackA communication signal routed to the EVO 16 Cue Mixes so the engineer can speak to performers without feeding the Main Mix.
TOSLINKThe optical connector and cable type used for EVO 16's ADAT and optical S/PDIF connections.
TRSTip-Ring-Sleeve 1/4-inch jack connection. Commonly used for balanced line-level audio and stereo headphones.
TSTip-Sleeve 1/4-inch jack connection. Commonly used for unbalanced instrument connections.
Word clockA digital timing signal used to synchronise audio devices. EVO 16 provides a BNC word-clock output but does not provide a BNC word-clock input.
XLRThree-pin balanced connector used for microphone signals.
