Troubleshooting
Use the checks below for common EVO 16 setup and operating issues. If the problem remains after completing the relevant checks, contact Audient Support.
EVO 16 is not detected by the computer
- Make sure EVO 16 is powered on and the USB cable is connected securely at both ends.
- Try another data-capable USB port on the computer.
- If possible, connect EVO 16 directly to the computer rather than through a hub or dock while troubleshooting.
- Try another USB data cable.
- On Windows, make sure the current EVO driver is installed and restart the computer after installation.
See Software Installation and Registration for the normal setup process and current compatibility guidance.
There is no signal from an analogue input
Select the input on EVO 16 and check the Motion UI input meter.
If there is no input level:
- Check the microphone, instrument or line source and its cable connections.
- Increase the input gain or use Smartgain.
- If the microphone requires phantom power, select the input and enable 48V.
- Check that the input has not been muted.
- If using a guitar or bass on input 1 or 2, make sure Instrument mode is enabled and the instrument is connected to the corresponding front-panel input.
If Smartgain does not complete successfully, check the source level and cable connections and make sure phantom power is enabled when the microphone requires it.
I cannot hear the expected signal from the speakers or headphones
EVO 16 can route different mixes to its analogue outputs and two headphone outputs, so first check the output routing in the EVO Mixer.
Open the System Panel and confirm that the required source is assigned to the output you are using. The headphone outputs can follow the Main Mix or be assigned to separate Cue Mixes.
If you need the same mix on the main speakers and a headphone output, assign Main Mix to both. If you need independent headphone mixes, assign different Cue Mixes to the headphone outputs.
See Monitoring and Output Controls and EVO Mixer and Routing.
The EVO Mixer does not appear
The EVO application runs from the operating-system menu area rather than always appearing as a conventional application window.
- On macOS, look for the EVO icon in the menu bar at the top-right of the screen.
- On Windows, look for the EVO icon in the system tray at the bottom-right of the screen.
With EVO 16 connected, use the EVO menu to open the mixer.
See EVO Application Won't Open for the current Audient guidance.
Mixer routing has become confusing or incorrect
If the EVO Mixer has been configured into an unwanted routing state, Audient provides a procedure for resetting the mixer application to its default settings.
The reset removes the EVO mixer state.xml file after quitting the application, then recreates the default state when the application is reopened.
Follow the current platform-specific procedure in How to reset the EVO mixer application.
I cannot hear a Cue Mix or independent headphone mix
- Open the EVO Mixer and select the required Cue Mix.
- Raise the required input and DAW-return faders in that Cue Mix.
- Open the System Panel and assign that Cue Mix to the required headphone or analogue output.
- Check the physical headphone or output level on EVO 16.
See How do I assign the headphone outputs on my EVO 16? for the current routing example.
Talkback is not reaching the artist mixes
EVO 16 sends Talkback to the Cue Mixes, not the Main Mix.
- Open the System Panel and check the selected Talkback source.
- If using Internal Talkback, make sure the required analogue or digital input is selected.
- If using External Talkback, make sure the external device is available to the computer.
- Open each required Cue Mix and raise the Talkback channel to the required level.
- Activate Talkback from the EVO Mixer or a Function button assigned to Talkback.
See How do I use talkback with the EVO 16?.
I hear clicks, pops or distorted digital audio
Clicks, pops or bursts of distortion in an ADAT or optical S/PDIF system are commonly associated with incorrect digital clocking.
Check that:
- There is only one master clock in the digital system.
- All connected devices are using the same sample rate.
- EVO 16 is set to the intended clock source.
- The optical format matches the connected equipment.
- At 88.2 or 96 kHz, the required SMUX optical connections are in place.
- Word-clock cabling and termination are correct when BNC word clock is being used.
See Optical Inputs, Outputs and Clocking for the complete setup procedures.
Recent EVO 16 firmware releases also include improvements to ADAT clocking and optical-output timing, so make sure the latest firmware is installed.
Optical channels are missing at 88.2 or 96 kHz
At 88.2 and 96 kHz, ADAT uses SMUX and each optical connection carries four channels rather than eight.
To access eight channels in one direction at these sample rates, use two optical cables for that direction and configure the optical ports for ADAT.
See Optical Inputs, Outputs and Clocking.
Loopback is not appearing or recording
- Make sure EVO 16 is connected and the current EVO application is installed.
- Open Setup > Input Routing and check the selected loopback source.
- In the recording or streaming application, select EVO 16 Input 23+24 or the equivalent Loopback stereo input name.
- If using Master Mix or a Cue Mix as the source, check the relevant fader levels in the EVO Mixer.
- If using a DAW output pair as the source, confirm that the required application audio is being sent to that output pair.
Not every application can access EVO 16 input channels 23+24. If the application exposes only a limited set of inputs, it may not be able to use EVO 16 loopback directly.
See Audio Loopback for the full routing options.
Standalone settings are not recalled as expected
EVO 16 can store a standalone state containing digital I/O, output routing and Talkback settings.
Set up the EVO Mixer as required, then choose Setup > Store Standalone State. When EVO 16 is powered without a host computer, the stored state is recalled. When it is connected to a computer, the EVO Mixer software configuration overrides the standalone state until the unit is powered off again.
See EVO 16 Standalone Operation.
EVO 16 is not working as expected with an iPhone or iPad
EVO 16 is not officially supported on iOS. Full functionality requires the EVO application, which is not available on iOS. Basic input or output may work in some applications, but correct operation is not guaranteed.
Use a supported macOS or Windows computer for full functionality.
EVO 16 behaves unexpectedly after power-up
Install the latest EVO software and firmware before carrying out deeper troubleshooting. Current software and firmware releases include compatibility improvements and fixes for previously identified behaviour.
See Firmware Updates, the EVO 16 Firmware Change Log and the EVO Drivers Change Log.
