Horizon 32 is a high-channel-count line-level audio interface and monitoring system designed for studios that need to connect a large number of analogue devices directly to the computer and Horizon Control. Thirty-two analogue inputs and outputs are carried on four Tascam-format D-sub connectors in each direction, with an additional stereo pair of TRS line inputs on channels 33–34 and dedicated TRS monitor outputs on channels 33–34.

At a glance

  • 32 D-sub line inputs and 32 D-sub line outputs

  • 2 additional TRS line inputs and dedicated monitor outputs on channels 33–34

  • 50 Virtual Channels from the host computer

  • 2 optical digital input/output banks for ADAT or S/PDIF

  • BNC word clock and Thunderbolt connectivity for multi-device Horizon systems. Cascaded Horizon systems must be clocked via BNC word clock

The physical channel numbers are retained throughout Horizon Control, so a source connected to input 17 appears as input 17 in the Mixer and an output destination keeps the same number in the Routing Matrix. This makes larger installations easier to trace without translating between hardware and software numbering.

Horizon 32 is line level throughout and does not contain microphone preamps. Input levels are therefore established by the equipment feeding Horizon, while the Mixer is used to name, meter and balance those sources for low-latency monitoring. Computer playback is returned through 50 Virtual Channels so live inputs and DAW playback can be combined in the same monitoring system.

TRS outputs 33–34 are Horizon 32's dedicated monitor-output pair. When Horizon 32 is the Primary monitoring device, Horizon Control provides the Main Mix, Independent Mixes, Monitor Controller, Monitor Profiles and Speaker Layouts used to manage the listening system without changing the level being recorded in the DAW.

Two optical digital input and output banks provide ADAT or S/PDIF connectivity, while BNC word clock handles digital synchronisation. Two Thunderbolt ports connect the system to the host computer and allow additional Horizon devices to be chained together. Up to four Horizon devices can be used in one system, with one unit designated Primary for active monitoring.

The front panel is centred on the Control Wheel and Motion UI, giving direct access to monitor level, metering, status and system settings. Detailed mixing, routing and device configuration are handled in Horizon Control.
