Troubleshooting

If Horizon does not behave as expected, work through the relevant checks below in order.

Horizon 32 does not power on

If Horizon 32 does not power on as expected:

  1. Check that the IEC mains cable is fully connected to Horizon 32 and to a working mains outlet.

  2. Applying mains power should power Horizon 32 on automatically and show the startup animation on the Motion UI display.

  3. If Horizon 32 was powered down from Settings on the device, briefly press and release the Control Wheel once to power it on again.

  4. If the unit still does not respond, disconnect it from mains power and contact Audient Support.

Horizon 32 is not detected

If Horizon Control does not detect Horizon 32:

  1. Confirm that Horizon 32 is powered on and the Motion UI display is active.

  2. Confirm that Horizon 32 is connected to the host computer using a Thunderbolt 3 or later cable. A standard USB-C cable is not suitable for the Horizon host connection.

  3. Check the Thunderbolt connection at both ends. In a multi-Horizon system, check each Thunderbolt connection in the chain. If available, try another known-good Thunderbolt cable or a different Thunderbolt port on the host computer.

  4. Make sure the current Horizon Control software and the required driver are installed.

  5. Open Horizon Control. If the connected Horizon 32 has not been added to the current Horizon system, open Hardware Settings > Add Device, select it from Available Devices, then select Save.

  6. On your Mac, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network and allow Horizon Control. Check that the Horizon driver extension is also enabled, following the instructions for your macOS version. Restart your Mac after changing these settings.

  7. In Horizon Control, select Help > Check for Horizon Updates. If a firmware update is available, follow the update procedure. If the connection problem persists, restart your Mac and open Horizon Control again.

DAW is not receiving audio from Horizon 32

If the DAW is not receiving the expected Horizon 32 input:

  1. In the DAW's audio or device settings, confirm that the installed Horizon audio device/driver is selected as the input device.

  2. Confirm that the DAW session and Horizon 32 are using the same sample rate.

  3. In Horizon Control, confirm that the intended input shows signal in the Mixer.

  4. Check that the DAW track is assigned to the intended Horizon input channel.

  5. If the source is digital and the input does not lock, follow the digital clocking checks below.

Clicks, pops, distortion or a digital input does not lock

If digital audio is unstable or a digital input does not lock:

  1. Confirm that only one device in the digital system is acting as the clock master.

  2. Confirm that Horizon, the DAW session and any connected digital equipment are using the same sample rate.

  3. In Hardware Settings, check Clock Source. Use Internal when Horizon is the clock master, Digital 1 or Digital 2 when Horizon is following the incoming digital signal on that optical bank, or External (Word Clock) when Horizon is following incoming BNC word clock.

  4. Check the optical and BNC word-clock connections.

  5. When using BNC word clock, enable 75 Ω termination on the final or only receiving device in the chain.

  6. On Horizon 32, open Settings > Status and check the current sample rate, digital input format and digital input clock status.

No audio from the monitor system

If the monitor system is connected but no audio is heard:

  1. In Hardware Settings, confirm that the Horizon connected to the monitor system is the Primary device.

  2. In the Monitor Controller, check Input Source, Output Level and Mute.

  3. Make sure the intended Monitor Profile is active and that its Speaker Layout uses the required channel configuration.

  4. Open the Primary device's Routing Matrix and confirm that the monitor channels are routed to the required physical outputs. New Monitor Profiles are added without output routing and must be routed manually.

  5. Check the physical monitor connection. When Horizon 32 is the Primary monitoring device, use TRS outputs 33–34 for the monitor path.

DAW playback is not heard in a Horizon mix

  1. In the DAW audio or device settings, confirm that Horizon is selected as the output device.

  2. Check the output assignment for the track or master output you want to hear.

  3. In the Horizon Control Mixer, locate the Virtual Channels carrying the DAW playback and confirm that they show signal.

  4. In the active Main Mix or Independent Mix, make sure those Virtual Channels are not muted and their faders are raised.

  5. If Monitor Controller > Input Source is set to Host Computer, computer playback bypasses the Horizon Mixer. Select Main Mix or the required Independent Mix when you want DAW playback combined with Horizon inputs.

Fewer digital channels are available than expected

  1. Open Hardware Settings and check that Digital Mode is set to ADAT or S/PDIF as required.

  2. Check the Horizon sample rate.

  3. Check the available digital channels in the Mixer and Routing Matrix after changing Digital Mode or sample rate.

ADAT channel count reduces as the sample rate increases. For example, Horizon provides 16 ADAT channels per input or output direction at 48 kHz, 8 at 96 kHz and 4 at 192 kHz. S/PDIF uses a two-channel digital path and supports sample rates up to 96 kHz.

A secondary Horizon does not control monitoring

Only the Primary Horizon device provides the active monitoring system.

  1. Open Hardware Settings.

  2. If the Horizon you want to use for monitoring is not the Primary device, remove the devices from Horizon Control. Select Add Device and add the intended Primary first, followed by any additional Horizon devices.

  3. Confirm that the Monitor Controller follows the Primary device. If several Horizon devices are connected, check that the BNC word-clock connections match the device order.

Audio cannot be routed directly between Horizon devices

The Routing Matrix is local to the selected Horizon device. It can route that device's available sources to its own physical outputs, but it cannot make a direct route from one Horizon device to an output on another.
