Metering and Solo
Metering
ASP4816 provides input and output metering to help maintain useful operating level without excessive noise or clipping.
The console provides:
- Main stereo output meters - 30 segments
- Line Input 17–24 / Subgroup output meters - 20 segments
- DAW input meters - 20 segments
- Mic/Line input meters - 3 segments
The 20-segment DAW meter and the 3-segment Mic/Line meter on each channel can exchange sources using the channel MTR switch.
Level alignment
0 VU is calibrated to +4 dBu.
The manual's digital reference assumes converters aligned so that +18 dBu = 0 dBFS. With that alignment, +4 dBu corresponds to -14 dBFS, providing 14 dB of digital headroom above nominal operating level.
The +18 dBu figure is a converter alignment reference, not the maximum analogue output capability of ASP4816. See Technical Specifications for the console's analogue maximum-output figures.
The master and subgroup OVER indicators illuminate at approximately +20 dBu.
PFL and AFL
With PFL selected, pressing a channel SOLO switch sends its pre-fader signal to the control-room monitoring path and main meters.
With AFL selected, SOLO auditions the post-fader signal. Where applicable, the audition point is also post-pan.
The master SOLO level sets the audition level. SOLO IN FRONT adjusts the balance between the solo signal and the stereo Mix so that the channel can be heard either in isolation or against the mix.
Solo in Place
SIP changes the stereo Mix output so that only soloed channels remain in the mix. It is therefore different from PFL/AFL, which use the monitoring solo bus.
Do not use Solo in Place while recording the stereo Mix unless you intend the solo action to affect the recorded Mix output.
More master solo controls are shown in Oscillator, Solo and Compressor.
