Glossary

AFL
After-fader listen. Auditions the post-fader signal through the monitoring solo system.

Aux / Auxiliary
A secondary mix bus used for effects sends, Foldback or other independent feeds. ASP4816 Classic has six Aux buses plus Cue A and Cue B.

Bus Master
Final level trim for a record bus after signals have been assigned through the routing matrix.

Cut
Mutes the associated signal path.

DAW input
Line-level return input normally feeding the LF path.

Dim
Reduces control-room monitor level by a preset amount. Talkback also triggers monitor dimming automatically.

Equaliser / EQ
Four-band tone-shaping section. The HF/LF and MID sections can each be assigned independently to the LF or SF path.

FLIP
Exchanges the Mic/Line and DAW inputs between the SF and LF paths.

Foldback
Artist-monitoring mix sent from the console to an appropriate headphone-amplifier or studio-monitoring system.

In-line architecture
A channel-strip design containing two signal paths. On ASP4816 Classic these are the Short Fader and Long Fader paths.

Insert
A send/return point that allows an external processor to be placed in series with a signal path.

LF / Long Fader
The signal path normally fed from the DAW return and commonly used for monitoring and mixdown. On the Classic console, LF controls are generally associated with the lighter control-surface areas.

Line input
High-level input intended for line-level equipment.

Mic input
Low-level input intended for microphones and similar sources.

Mix
The main stereo bus and stereo output of the console.

Pan
Positions a mono source between left/right Mix buses or between selected odd/even record buses.

PFL
Pre-fader listen. Auditions a signal before its fader through the monitoring solo system.

Q
Controls the bandwidth of the peaking mid-band EQ. Higher Q values produce a narrower affected frequency range.

Routing
Assignment of a signal to one or more of the 16 record buses.

SF / Short Fader
The signal path normally fed from the Mic/Line input and commonly used for recording. On the Classic console, SF controls are generally associated with the dark control-surface areas.

SHIFT
Changes the eight record-bus routing switches from buses 1–8 to buses 9–16.

Solo in Place (SIP)
Changes the stereo Mix output so that only soloed channels remain. Unlike PFL/AFL, this affects the Mix output itself.

Stereo bus
The main left/right Mix bus feeding the console's stereo output path.
