Power Supply

Original manual PSU naming

The original ASP8024 manual is internally inconsistent about the power-supply model. Page 5 refers to an ASP8700 PSU, while pages 6 and 53 refer to an ASP8120. The controls and specifications on this page reproduce the ASP8120 information given on pages 6 and 53. Check the model number on the PSU fitted to your console before following model-specific instructions, and do not assume that different PSU models are interchangeable.

ASP8120 controls and indicators

The ASP8120 described in the original manual is a 3U rack-mounting power supply. Its controls are:

  • ON/OFF switch
  • reset switch for the +18 V and -18 V rails
  • mains-voltage selector on the rear panel

Three LEDs indicate the presence of the +18 V, -18 V and +48 V power rails. PSU-status indicators are also provided on the console's master-meter section.

The original front-panel drawing additionally labels a T500 mA fuse for the 48 V rail. This is separate from the mains fuse ratings described below.

Cooling and console connection

Two low-noise, slow-running fans cool the PSU so that, according to the original manual, it can normally be located in the same room as the console.

A 4 metre power-supply cable is supplied to connect the console to the PSU.

Ventilation and placement

The original manual contains directly conflicting placement instructions. Page 6 says never to place the power supply on the floor, while page 53 says that it may be placed directly on a floor.

Because the source contradicts itself, this web manual does not make a floor-specific recommendation. Keep all power-supply ventilation slots and fans unobstructed, and install or position the PSU so that adequate airflow is maintained.

Mains voltage and fuse ratings

For the ASP8120 described on page 6 of the original manual:

Voltage-selector positionOperating rangeMains fuse
230 V210–250 V1 1/4 inch T8A
115 V105–125 V1 1/4 inch T16A

Do not operate the unit outside the stated voltage ranges. For 100 V operation, the original manual instructs the user to contact their dealer.

Before use, check that the voltage selector on the rear of the PSU is set correctly for the local mains supply. Always replace a mains fuse with the same type and rating specified for the selected voltage.

If a mains fuse fails, the original manual advises checking the mains-voltage setting, mains cord and mains supply before replacing the fuse.

See Installation and Safety for the original console safety and installation requirements.
