Metering and Solo
Channel metering
Meters help keep signals between the two gain-structure extremes: levels that are too high can clip, while levels that are unnecessarily low leave less separation between the wanted signal and the system noise floor. Use the input and output meters to establish healthy levels at each stage.
Each input strip provides two meters:
- A 20-segment meter that normally displays the DAW input.
- A 3-segment meter that normally displays the Mic/Line input.
Press MTR to reverse these assignments so the Mic/Line input is shown on the 20-segment meter and the DAW input is shown on the smaller meter.
The meter source selection is independent of FLIP; MTR changes what the meters display, while FLIP changes which input feeds the LF and SF signal paths.
Meter alignment
The console's nominal operating level is 0 VU = +4 dBu.
When a connected digital converter is aligned so that +18 dBu = 0 dBFS, a signal at 0 VU on the console corresponds to -14 dBFS, providing 14 dB of digital headroom above nominal level.
The main and subgroup meter sections also provide an OVER indication at +20 dBu.
Meters are provided for:
- Main stereo output — 30 segments
- Line Inputs 17–24 / subgroup outputs — 20 segments
- DAW inputs — 20 segments
- Mic/Line inputs — 3 segments
PFL and AFL
With Solo-in-Place disengaged, the master solo mode can be set to PFL or AFL.
- PFL auditions the pre-fader signal.
- AFL auditions the post-fader, post-pan signal.
Soloed signals are heard through the control-room monitor path and shown on the master meters.
Solo-in-Front
SOLO IN FRONT sets the balance between the soloed signal and the normal stereo Mix, allowing the soloed source to be heard either in isolation or with some of the Mix behind it.
Solo-in-Place
Solo-in-Place (SIP) changes the stereo Mix output. If the Mix output is being recorded, engaging SIP will also change the recorded signal.
SIP replaces the normal stereo Mix with the post-pan signal from the soloed channel or channels. It is useful when setting up or checking a mix, but should not be used where altering the Mix output would be undesirable.
