Glossary
AFL
After-Fade Listen. Auditions the post-fader, post-pan signal through the control-room monitoring system and master meters.
Auxiliaries
Six secondary mix buses, Aux 1–6, typically used for effects sends or other auxiliary destinations. Aux buses can be sourced from the LF or SF path and operated pre- or post-fader. Cue A and Cue B are separate cue buses primarily intended for foldback.
Aux Master
Controls the overall level of an Aux output after the individual channel send levels have created the mix. Aux Master SOLO is always AFL.
Bus Master
The final ±10 dB level adjustment for the corresponding record-bus output.
CUT
Mutes the associated signal path. CUT controls are provided on both SF and LF paths and in several master sections.
DIM
Reduces the control-room monitor level by 15 dB. DIM is also activated automatically when talkback is used.
Equaliser
The four-band splittable EQ comprising HF and LF shelving bands plus two parametric mid bands. The HF/LF and MIDS sections can be switched independently between LF and SF paths.
FLIP
Swaps the Mic/Line and DAW sources between the LF and SF paths. Normally Mic/Line feeds SF and DAW feeds LF; with FLIP pressed, DAW feeds SF and Mic/Line feeds LF.
Foldback
An artist monitoring mix sent from Foldback A or Foldback B, normally using Cue A and Cue B. Talkback can also be routed to both Foldback outputs. The outputs are line level and normally feed a headphone amplifier/distribution system.
In-line
A console architecture containing two signal paths within each physical channel strip. On ASP4816-SE these are the SF and LF paths, allowing the Mic/Line and DAW-return sources to share channel processing and routing facilities.
Insert Point
A send and return connection that allows external processing to be placed in series with a signal path. The Mic/Line and DAW channel inserts are switched using their respective INSERT IN controls. Separate insert connections are also provided for the subgroup paths.
LF
Long Fader path. Normally receives the DAW input and is primarily used for monitoring and mixing. On ASP4816-SE, the darker areas of the channel strip are associated with the LF path. FLIP can swap the Mic/Line and DAW sources between LF and SF.
Line
An input intended for line-level sources such as audio interfaces, converters and other external equipment.
Mic
The XLR microphone input intended for microphones and other suitable low-level sources.
Mix
Assigns a signal to the main stereo Mix bus. Both LF and SF paths can be routed to Mix.
PAN
Positions a signal across a stereo or odd/even bus pair. The LF PAN control operates across the stereo Mix bus. The SF PAN control can distribute a signal across selected odd/even record buses when PAN routing is enabled.
PFL
Pre-Fade Listen. Auditions a signal before the channel fader through the control-room monitoring system and master meters.
Q
Controls the bandwidth of a parametric EQ band. Higher Q values affect a narrower frequency range; lower Q values affect a wider range. ASP4816-SE provides a Q range of approximately 0.65–3.8 on both parametric mid bands.
Routing
Assigns a signal to one or more of the 16 record buses. When an odd/even bus pair is selected and PAN is enabled, the signal can be positioned between those buses.
SF
Short Fader path. In the normal configuration it receives the Mic/Line input and is commonly used for record-bus routing. The SF path can also be routed to the stereo Mix bus. On ASP4816-SE, light control-surface areas and light path-selection switches are associated with the SF path.
SHIFT
Changes the eight record-bus routing controls from buses 1–8 to buses 9–16.
Solo in Place (SIP)
Places the post-pan signal from the soloed channel(s) onto the stereo Mix output while muting the other Mix signals. The PFL/AFL selector has no effect in SIP mode. Because SIP changes the stereo Mix output, it will be captured if that output is being recorded.
Stereo Mix Bus
The main left/right summing bus of the console. Signals assigned using MIX feed this bus. Its output is available from the three stereo Mix output pairs and can also be selected as the Control Room monitor source.
